The First Time Was Ignorance

Early in my career, I razor cut a client with fine, low-density hair because the technique was fashionable and I had just practised it. The result was over-thinned ends with visible splitting within three weeks. I attributed it to the client's home care. That was wrong.

The Second Time Was Overconfidence

Years later, a client with similar hair requested a razor-textured fringe. I assessed the hair as healthy and proceeded. The same outcome appeared. That repetition forced me to examine the technique rather than the client.

Pros and Cons of Razor Cutting by Hair Type

  • Pro: Exceptional for adding movement and reducing weight in medium to coarse, healthy hair
  • Pro: Creates organic, lived-in texture that scissor work rarely replicates
  • Con: The blade opens the hair cuticle on each pass, accelerating damage on compromised or fine strands
  • Con: Tension control during razor work is harder to calibrate than scissor tension
  • Con: Results are difficult to reverse without a significant length reduction

What Changed After the Second Incident

I now assess hair elasticity and porosity before any razor service. Fine hair with high porosity fails consistently under razor work regardless of blade sharpness or stylist skill. The technique is not wrong. The application criteria were.
