A client came in requesting a graduated bob with a 45-degree angle throughout. I worked from my usual reference points without measuring. The left side finished 8mm longer than the right at the perimeter. She noticed before I did.
How Graduation Errors Accumulate
Graduation is angle-dependent. Each section builds on the previous guide. If the initial angle drifts by even a few degrees, the error multiplies across every subsequent section. By the time the cut is complete, the cumulative deviation is visible and structural.
Pros and Cons of Freehand Graduation vs. Measured Angles

The Diagnostic Method I Now Use
Before beginning the second side, I hold both guide sections together at the nape and compare them visually and by feel. A 2-second check at that stage catches drift before it becomes a structural problem. I also photograph the initial guide section on complex cuts for reference during the service.
