After years of clipper work, I stopped checking my wrist angle mid-fade. The result on one particular client was a visible ridge at the mid-occipital that only appeared once the hair was dry and the client was under direct lighting. Fixing it required removing nearly 6mm more than planned.

Freehand clipper work removes the guard as a reference point. Every pass relies on consistent wrist rotation, blade angle, and travel speed. Any one of those variables drifting by even a small margin compounds across the entire blending zone.
